It was a good movie and I enjoyed it. The plot is simple, and the movie is based on the true events. The movie though is not an historical account of the freedom fighters and their fight against the British rule, but rather it is a fictional creation about the struggles of a group of freedom fighters and their families during the time of the British rule.

The movie was set during 1857-1858, which was when the uprising against the British rule started in India. The movie starts with the British capture of Orissa and Bihar. The family of Pandey lived in Bihar then. His father had to flee to Nepal with the rest of his family when the British army attacked their village, and when the British troops attack the village, Pandey’s father was killed. An army of armed natives later came back to take revenge for this and they attacked the village.

The main characters of the movie were based on real people, including Mangal Pandey, a freedom fighter who was a lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army, Satyajit Ray, a director and screenwriter, and Shyam Benegal, a filmmaker, scriptwriter, and producer.

Mangal Pandey: The Rising is one of the only Indian movies to premiere at Cannes, which has a rich tradition of Indian cinema. It is the first Indian film to premiere at this prestigious festival.
