The driving controls are one of the negatives of LASR. The controls will always be the same. You steer your car with the analogue stick on the controller and back out with one of the shoulder buttons. Acceleration is always controlled by the left shoulder while braking is with the right shoulder. You simply have to adapt to the controls quickly, but it's difficult to get used to them in the first place. Then again, if you're a seasoned local racer who's used to two-button steering on a gamepad, you'll really feel out of place in L.A. Street Racing. No wonder why it's best to start the game with a four-button controller.
At least, that's what I think I would've liked LASR. The graphics are a little weird--especially with the way the cars look as if they've been spray-painted well-done metallic silver. Textures and overall look of the city feels pretty kitschy, possibly because the cityscape is always a blur. You might not notice it at first, but you'll spend a lot of time looking through the cityscape, and at that point, you'll probably wish you were back in the racing.
LASR isn't bad. In fact, it's a fairly good attempt at a racing simulation combining a story mode, city racing and international races. It's just that where better games show how to do something, LASR does everything badly in the pursuit of realism. It's a good game, but not a great one.
The graphics and sound quality are good, the gameplay is responsive and there are a few races to try out... but what really would've made it stand out from other racing games is a deeper, more interactive story mode than what we have here. It doesn't make it a bad game, but it can easily be seen as one of those titles you pick up at a bargain basement and regret the whole time you're playing it. d2c66b5586
