While at the University of Michigan, I served on the Student Life and Equity Advisory Board. I had the opportunity to learn about WMU’s programs and see how they could support educational equity, diversity, and access to higher education. I found my perfect fit at WMU as I recognized that I wanted to work in special education as well as social justice. My particular interest is looking at how pre-service teachers can be prepared by education schools to implement social justice in their pedagogies.
How does WMU's education programs and campus support your professional development? WMU offers on-site support that is available when I need it most, including flexible scale, childcare and PD experiences.
What is your favorite thing about your campus or department? My favorite thing about WMU has been the incredible synergy of departments. By working alongside colleagues of different departments and specialties, I am able to really learn from the ground up. Not only am I learning about new ways to approach teaching, and developing my pedagogy, but I have learned another language from colleagues.
What are your career goals and how do you hope to advance them? My goal is to advance my own practice and to collaborate with others in the field of education. I want to continue to gain valuable skills, experiences and connections, and I want to grow professionally and personally. I hope to advance my practice at WMU, to be self-aware, and to remain open to growth and change. I also want to continue sharing my passion for social justice and restorative justice and to continue using my enthusiasm and skills to disrupt the status quo in education.
Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself in a position of self-awareness, using my experiences to share ways to advance the field of education. I would hope to be a role model for the field and inspire a generation of teachers and reformers. d2c66b5586
