During a road trip, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes met Howard Stark, an elderly inventor. Howard promised to help Steve and Bucky retrain as spies for S.H.I.E.L.D. to continue the legacy of the former Winter Soldier. The group stole an equipment transport truck to travel the country in order to find documents that trace their origins. During dinner, the group met the opportunistic spy Howard Stark, and he joined the group after utilizing an explosive device to kill the two men who had been following them and keeping an eye on the group.[121]
The Avengers split up to confront either the former Super-Skrull or the current one. While Thor battled the first Super-Skrull, Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk fought the one currently assimilating the crystal. The battle was cut short when Thor, using Mjolnir to harpoon the weapon and strangle him, broke the crystal and reverted the Super-Skrull back to the Super-Skrull of the past, who reverted back to his original human form.[123]

Following their successful infiltration of Tony Stark's estate, the group managed to capture several aliens and use them as hostages, although not without some casualties.
