I read this digital textbook over a period of one month, and once I had finished I really wanted more. I could not stop thinking about the head and neck, and as I applied this knowledge to patients it was like being able to stop the stomach on the X-ray. Remembering the basic oral anatomy as a dentist has changed my practice radically. For me and many others, this book is the best example of an eBook textbook for dentists yet written.
It is always useful to have a selection of books to review when any uncertainties in one's knowledge need to be answered. In this case, I needed to refresh a number of quite specific aspects of head and neck anatomy prior to a period of theatre work where it was going to be central to directing otolaryngology theatre teams. The operations proved particularly interesting, with the surgical teams in orbit requiring access to both the nasopharynx and base of the skull via a retroglottic incision. This was dictated by the pathology which was already suspected.
I use this textbook a lot when studying nasal surgery and head and neck surgery. However, the chapter on salivary glands is so detailed will make a nice reference and guide to different sites for salivary gland surgery.
It is a sad day when a book becomes obsolete, but this one is thanks to the recent and imminent release of the 4th edition of Gray's Anatomy. My copy of the 3rd edition now appears to be superseded for much head and neck surgery, yet we always keep 3rd edition inter-current with our Oxford Neurology set and book shelf. A major change for us is the end to the anterolateral palatine approach for repairing to the anterior palate. The authors adopted this in the 3rd edition to provide and excellent overview of the anterior palatine foramen in the dog.
It has clear details in each chapter with a section which begins the consideration of clinical relevance at the end of each chapter. Each chapter is logically laid out and provides clear detail of all aspects of head and neck anatomy. It is very gratifying that the autonomic nervous system has been detailed in its own chapter. From a student who spent a ridiculous number of hours turning the pages of traditional textbooks piecing together one of the major controlling mechanisms in the human body, it is pleasing to see the precise detail at last placed together for all to see. The final chapter (prior to the appendix detailing lymphatic drainage) provides a robust description of anatomy with respect to local anaesthesia. The labelling in all chapters is clear and whilst there is an absence of extensive turgid narrative, the information is extensive and very well laid out. d2c66b5586
