In August 2015, Madonna announced that she would release a new album in 2016, and that she would be releasing it on her own label, Madge Records. Madonna had always worked with the record label Geffen Records, but this album would be released on Madge Records. It would also be distributed by Interscope Geffen A&M, who also distributes her previous albums. The album was initially titled MDNA, but was changed to Madonna, which was the title of her first commercially released studio album in the US, released in 1985. Madonna announced that the new album would be released in autumn 2016, and that she would not be touring in support of it.
Rebel Heart was recorded in London, France and the US and produced by Madonna, Frank Dukes, Pascal Gabriel and Bloodshy & Avant. The album featured guest appearances by Bruno Mars, Sylvia Mason-James, José González, Tinashe, Miguel and The Weeknd. The album debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200 and at #1 on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart. Madonna promoted the album with a world tour called Rebel Heart Tour, which began in North America in June 2015 and ended in January 2016.
The album debuted at number one in more than 20 countries, including US Billboard 200 at number 1. It entered the Australian ARIA Chart at number 1, becoming the fifth album to do so. The album also topped the charts in Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. In the US, the album debuted at number 1, making it Madonna’s tenth number-one album (fourth on the Billboard 200 chart). The album also topped the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, becoming her 12th number one album on that chart.
The album received generally mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the lyrics and the themes, and some criticized Madonna’s “silly” actions. On this album Madonna also released the compilation Nothing Fails and the single Ghosttown.
Madonna Rebel Heart was nominated for the 2016 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It was one of the biggest Grammy Award snubs of the past few years. Madge was nominated 827ec27edc
