are you the impatient type who values speed above all else in a printer? or are you in a small office or workgroup that has heavy printing needs? if you fall into one of those categories, you're going to love the ricoh aficio cl3500n ($700 street).
not only is the cl3500n the fastest printer i've seen in its price range, it offers paper-handling features to match its speed: a 630-sheet standard capacity, a maximum 1,690 sheets, an optional duplexer ($230 list), and a 50,000-page-per-month duty cycle. (it's designed to average up to 16,000 pages per month over its lifetime, but you can print up to 50,000 in a month from time to time without driving up repair costs.) output quality is uneven, but good enough for most business needs.
as you might expect in a heavy-duty printer, the cl3500n is reasonably hefty. at 15.7 by 16.5 by 21.1 inches (hwd), it's too large to share a desk with, and as it weighs 72.6 pounds, moving it across the room is a two-person job.
physical setup is straightforward, but a little more involved than it is with the cl3500n's peers. you need to do the usual tasks such as removing shipping restraints, installing four toner cartridges, and loading paper. extra initial steps include hooking up a waste toner bottle and four photoconductor units. this requires carefully sliding each photoconductor off its plastic holder and onto a rail inside the printer.
whatever extra time you spend setting up the cl3500n, you'll eventually make it up while printing pages. built around an engine that's rated at 22 pages per minute for both monochrome and color, the cl3500n's total time running my business applications suite (timed with qualitylogic's hardware and software) was just 9 minutes 16 seconds.
unfortunately, the cl3500n stubs its toe on output quality, though it is fine for most business needs. text output in particular is a mixed bag. in our tests, the fonts you're most likely to use for business purposes, such as arial and times news roman, were easily readable at 4 points and were well formed with dark characters and crisp clean edges. the printer, however, had more trouble than most lasers i've seen with my test suite's two stylized fonts which use thick strokes. if your needs include printing desktop-publishing documents with highly stylized fonts, the cl3500n isn't for you.
graphics quality was within the range for typical color lasers, but at the low end of it. the printer is easily good enough for internal business use. but as it demonstrated visible dithering (patterns formed by the placement of dots) and has a tendency to lose thin lines, i wouldn't consider using the cl3500n for printing important brochures for potential clients.
this speedy showing makes the cl3500n the fastest printer i've seen in its price range. the only competitor that comes close is the oki printing solutions c5500n, which managed 9:42. to find a significantly faster machine, you'd have to raise your budget to the level of the xerox phaser 6300dn, an editors' choice winner, which took 7:07\u2014but costs $1,200 (street). 2b1af7f3a8
