It's said that laughter is the best medicine. While this neat phrase omits the existence of actual medicine, there is a point behind it: most situations are immeasurably improved with a good laugh. If you're in the need of something funny on your screen, streaming services have upped the game when it comes to on-demand comedy, and Netflix has more than its fair share. From stand-up specials, to classic comedy films, to that sitcom you've been meaning to watch and will inevitably binge, there's something to suit any sense of humour. We've picked out some of our favourites below.
There's nothing like a panel show teeming with comedians to help crack a smile and, taking aim at current affairs, Mock The Week does not disappoint. Netflix is streaming old episodes, of course, but with Dara Ó Briain as the host, the jokes still land, even if the topics they're about are no longer relevant. Also featuring guests such as Romesh Ranganathan, Rob Beckett and Sara Pascoe, if this doesn't make you laugh, we don't know what will. netflix.com
Forget romcoms, Chuck Lorre's The Kominsky Method is the bro-com to keep you laughing through the winter chill. Starring Michael Douglas as ageing acting coach Sandy Kominsky, alongside Alan Arkin as his bereaved best friend, the show is a heartening depiction of enduring male friendship where affection comes in the form of grumpy insults and sarcasm. Oh, and the second episode sees Patti LaBelle perform "Lady Marmalade" and a Barbra Streisand drag queen sing to a room of grievers at a funeral. If that doesn't make you want to watch it, we don't know what will. netflix.com
At first glance, BoJack Horseman reads as a silly adult cartoon to binge watch a hangover away, but if you keep on watching you'll soon realise it's one of the most touching and honest portrayals of human existence on Netflix. The best part? It's also hilarious. Following the titular, washed-up Nineties TV star, BoJack Horseman, as he battles against the self-destructive world of showbiz and his own nihilistic tendencies, its surreal brand of satire in a world populated by anthropomorphic celebrities touches on everything from depression and addiction to both sexual and psychological abuse. It gets heavy, particularly during the final season, but the dark is always punctuated by bright humour and gags that will keep you smiling, even when BoJack isn't. netflix.com
(Netflix Original) When Miles Elliot (Paul Rudd) hears about a spa that will truly transform his mind, body and soul, he jumps at the chance to reinvent himself. What he doesn't realise is that the underground spa he visits actually specialises in creating new and improved clones of its clients, while simply murdering the original person. Things don't quite go to plan and soon Miles finds himself navigating life with two versions of himself, as he and his new and improved clone take it in turns to go to work and keep up appearances around the house. Soul searching, fights with his twin and a few laughs soon follow, in a show that's as dark as it is witty. netflix.com
