Regardless of the type of climate where you live, it is highly recommended that you keep your stand up paddle board indoors when not in use. For all boards, the key is to keep your SUP in a cool dark location where it is safe and protected. Here are some tips for storing your paddle board.
If you are just getting into paddleboarding, you will likely want to look for an all-around inflatable SUP that will do many things well and let you explore different venues and types of paddling.
If you are purchasing for a specific type of paddleboarding, there are specific boards tailored to specific uses. You can choose from boards designed for SUP surfing, boards ideal for SUP Yoga, whitewater SUP boards, boards for SUP touring, or even a racing SUP. You may be looking for a SUP board for your kids, or a SUP board for specialized use, such as fishing, windsurfing, or group paddling. Knowing the category of board you are looking for is the first step to narrowing down your choices.
The setup divides the fin area equally among the three fins and results in the total depth of the fins being much less than a tall center fin in the more typical setup. Having only 4 inches of fin depth comes in very handy when paddling over rocks or other objects in shallow water, where some of the most interesting exploring opportunities will be found.
A not very glamorous, but truly essential component of your SUP kit is a personal flotation device (PFD), which is important for your personal safety and required by law on many lakes and waterways where you may want to paddle.
There are situations where an inherently buoyant lifejacket is the only option, such as whitewater paddling, and a lifejacket is really the only safe choice for kids, beginners, and paddlers who are not strong swimmers. A belt pack can be a valid choice for adults with good swimming skills while paddling on flat water, and is in fact the most popular type of PFD that we sell.
The one situation where paddling without a PFD is generally accepted is while surfing at the beach, but surfers are taking a known risk and should take precautions including always surfing with a buddy in case a rescue is needed.
A specific type of leash is used in whitewater, or on any waterway with shallow water and a strong current, where there is a risk of entrapment by a leash cord. A leash for moving river use must have quick-release mechanism at or above waist level that can be easily reached by the paddler in case the cord gets snagged on a rock or branch.
First of all, consider where you will be using the board. Are you planning to use your board primarily in flatwater conditions? For example, if you live near a lake, pond or bay. Somewhere you are unlikely to encounter big surf. These are great conditions to take your SUP board on longer paddles, or train towards a goal of entering your local SUP race circuit.
You can always expect a little chop, but for the most part, this board would be designed as an all-purpose flatwater touring board with a displacement bow and good overall stability (See: 5 Great Touring SUPs for entry-level to intermediate paddleboarding).
On top of extensive research, we enjoyed putting these SUPs to the test. Among our testers, Editor Mary Murphy is an avid standup paddleboarder for day trips and overnighters. Contributor Morgan Tilton also SUPs and has a self-supported first SUP descent down the 100-mile wild whitewater of the Escalante River, in Utah.
Inflatable SUPs usually are made of plastic with reinforcements, such as along the rail and beneath where the paddler stands. They are pumped up with air for use, similar to pumping up your bike tires before a ride. The materials of the deck pad are soft underfoot.
The deck pad covers the top of the SUP where the paddler will sit or stand. Coverage varies per board, and some boards have wider, longer patches of pad than others. The material blend is unique to each brand but often includes plastic.
We recommend the Tower Xplorer for paddle boarders who love touring and want a paddleboard they can use to effortlessly explore and go on adventures around large bodies of water. This is because this board makes it easy and efficient to traverse large distances.
The inflatable SUP board market has been increasingly growing in the last few years thanks to development in drop stitching technology. These boards use the high pressure of the air to fill their core and often have drop stitching construction and PVC exteriors as their main materials. Due to the high pressure air, these boards can feel very solid once inflated. The biggest advantage with inflatable SUPs is their portability. Folding into bags iSUPs are great for those who need to save on storage or are looking for a board they can take anywhere with them.
Attachment points/ D-rings: D-rings are an excellent extra when looking for a board. D-rings provide attachment areas where you can tie-down personal belongings, add seats, fishing rods and many more to your board. They provide the freedom to customize your board as you see fit.
Construction: there are inflatable, epoxy, and soft-top paddleboards that accommodate a different user; Stability: your paddleboard should be between 10 and 12 inches long, 31 to 33 inches wide, and 175 to 240 liters full; Versatility: ideally, your paddleboard should be able to serve many purposes, ranging from full-on wave conquest to relaxing on-water yoga practice.
Despite the heavy-duty construction, the FunWater is a lightweight paddleboard, weighing only 17.6 pounds. If you are looking for a cheap all-around paddle board for a teen, this would be great.

Registration is required if your paddleboard is over ten feet long. You can register your board at any deputy registrar of motor vehicles (where you license your car), or at the DNR License Center, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, Minnesota.
Shallow rocks and even small rapids can be dangerous to paddleboard. Additional paddling skills and equipment like helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, shin guards, special leashes, foot protection and special boards may all be required depending on the level of difficulty.
You found a guy (or girl) that is a hard core paddle boarder. They live near the coast, and they SUP surf everyday. They have a few too many paddleboards, and are selling off one of their favorite SUP{ boards at a great deal. Sounds perfect?
Again, wrong. That is like buying sports car from a 20 year old kid. That used paddle board has lived a rough life. If they surf every day on it, they wipe out on it every day. They get tumbled in breaking waves everyday, and that board has likely seen its share of heavy impact from waves and shore break. These are all things that weaken a paddleboard.
When storing a deflated paddleboard, it's important to rinse and fully dry it before deflating and rolling it up. It is important to keep it somewhere dry, out of sunlight, and free from extreme temperatures. It's also possible to leave the board inflated for convenience if it doesn't need to be transported or used frequently. If used seasonally, it's OK to deflate for those times of the year when it's not used often, but it's technically better not to leave it tightly rolled up as that may cause hard creases that can create weak points over time.

The average SUP can cost anywhere from $400 to $1100. Generally, the larger the board is, the more it will cost. Another factor in pricing is the materials that go into the board (for this reason, hard SUPs pricier than iSUPs.) Good quality inflatable SUPs go for $400 to over $800 - but you get what you pay for! 59ce067264
